Physical activity and sport in society (core)
The positive impact of physical activity and sport
  • Identify the similarities and differences between physical activity for health and physical activity for fitness

  • Examine the positive impact that regular physical activity, sport and competition can have on the dimensions of health

  • Explain how sport and sporting events can enhance local communities

  • Propose strategies to increase participation in physical activity and sport in the local community

  • Describe the features of successful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs that aim to improve health outcomes and engagement in sport

  • Explain the importance of physical activity and sport for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, their Cultures and Communities

  • Evaluate the positive impact that role models have on the individual and community, including role models in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities

  • Explain how self-management skills and personal attributes can increase the potential for success for elite athletes

  • Discuss how skills and attributes, developed through various roles involving physical activity and sport, may be transferable to school, the community or workplace settings

  • Outline the various ways people can volunteer in contexts related to physical activity and sport, and explain the personal and community benefits of such involvement

Australia’s evolving sporting identity
  • Discuss current and historical perspectives of Australia as a sporting nation and participate in a range of sports that are traditionally considered to be ‘Australian sports’

  • Assess how physical activity and sport contribute to the establishment of community and national identities in Australia

  • Examine how the increased involvement and success of women in sport locally and internationally has influenced Australia's sporting identity
