Leisure and recreation (option)
Perceptions of leisure and recreation
  • Discuss physical activity as a form of leisure and recreation

  • Participate in a range of active forms of leisure and recreation and reflect on the benefits to the individual and the community

  • Examine students’ own and others’ perceptions of physical activity as a viable and rewarding form of leisure and recreation

  • Explain why perceptions of, and engagement in, active leisure and recreation may change over time

Settings for leisure and recreation
  • Investigate active and engaging leisure and recreational settings in the local community and beyond

  • Assess the suitability of active forms of leisure and recreation for a diverse range of people

  • Assess initiatives designed to increase participation in active forms of leisure and recreation

  • Propose strategies to improve engagement in leisure and recreational activities in the school and local community

Outdoor education
  • Examine a range of outdoor recreational activities and discuss the benefits to the individual and the community

  • Describe how to engage with Traditional Custodians of Country and/or Place and discuss how this can enhance outdoor experiences

  • Describe the planning and actions required for safe and ethical participation in outdoor recreational activities

  • Explain skills required for successful participation in a range of outdoor recreational activities

  • Demonstrate navigational skills in a practical setting, including map reading, taking grid bearings and compass bearings, measuring and estimating distances and natural navigation

  • Assess the suitability of a potential campsite by considering safety issues, including geographic, environmental and climatic considerations and evaluating the likelihood of treefall

  • Describe emergency management skills, including wilderness first aid, what to do when lost, and natural disaster procedures for bushfires, floods and lightning

  • Explain how group dynamics and leadership styles influence safety and group cohesion, and how they contribute to positive outcomes in outdoor experiences

  • Analyse a range of situations of potential risk in outdoor recreation and propose strategies to successfully balance risk and enjoyment without compromising safety

Engaging with active forms of leisure and recreation
  • Engage in a range of leisure and recreational activities and explain how each contributes to an active lifestyle

  • Outline Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ leisure and recreational activities that draw on Cultural Practices and Knowledges of Country and Place

  • Identify and participate in nature-based or outdoor leisure and recreational activities, including those that prioritise opportunities to be social

  • Explain and demonstrate how active forms of leisure and recreation can provide opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, including problem-solving, decision-making, specialised movement skills and equipment

  • Identify and participate in indoor forms of leisure and recreational activities and explain their relevance as engaging forms of physical activity

  • Investigate adventure-based leisure and recreational activities, including those that involve active travel or journeys

  • Investigate action, rush, and trick forms of leisure and recreational activities

  • Assess and implement strategies and tactics that could assist with task mastery, safety, enjoyment, selection of location and enhancement of a shared experience in leisure and recreational activities
