Stage 4

Science of optimising performance (core)

Some students with disability may require adjustments or modifications, including the use of assistive devices to participate in movement skills and experiences.

Fitness and recovery
  • Explain the role of fitness and recovery in enhancing participation, performance and safety

  • Describe how health-related and skill-related components of fitness are used in a range of physical activities and sports

  • Analyse the components of fitness required for successful performance in specific sports and develop strategies to maintain or enhance these

  • Investigate methods to measure and monitor fitness progress

  • Discuss the relevance and reliability of fitness testing for improving performance, injury rehabilitation and team selection

  • Describe factors that influence fitness and recovery, including sleep, hydration and nutrition

  • Discuss how the menstrual cycle may impact fitness and recovery

  • Outline the Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type (FITT) principle and explain how it can be applied to improve fitness and performance

  • Explain how safety considerations in the design and implementation of physical fitness programs minimise the risk of injury

  • Outline the types of training that aim to improve performance

  • Describe the principles of training used in aerobic and strength training

  • Design a training program and participate in sessions that aim to improve fitness or performance

  • Identify and practise recovery techniques for a range of physical activities and sports

Basics of biomechanics
  • Apply centre of gravity, base of support and line of gravity in movement contexts to demonstrate how balance and stability can be improved

  • Demonstrate how to improve accuracy and consistency in a range of sporting contexts

  • Demonstrate how to apply force in a range of movement contexts, including when using sport-specific equipment

  • Demonstrate how to absorb force in a range of sporting contexts

  • Discuss the importance of practice, collaboration, communication and problem-solving when refining biomechanics in sporting movements

  • Provide and apply feedback on biomechanics in practice to enhance movement efficiency and safety

Sport psychology
  • Describe how sport psychology can optimise performance in a variety of movement contexts

  • Explain and rehearse sport psychology techniques that may enhance motivation, confidence and movement skill performance

Thinking and communicating
  • Create written texts to explain and evaluate approaches to supporting and enhancing performance

  • Use subject-specific language to communicate aspects of performance optimisation
