7–10Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Stage 5
Teachers select options from:
- Birth to 5 years
- Early childhood education and care
- The mental health and wellbeing of children
- Children globally
- School-developed option.
Through the school-developed option, schools are provided with the opportunity to develop students’ knowledge, understanding and skills related to a particular area of interest or a current issue, and to design and develop strategies for effective learning.
The school-developed option should cover a particular area that is not studied through other core focus areas or options.
The content selected for the school-developed option must not overlap with or duplicate content from any Stage 6 syllabus.
Only ONE school-developed option can be studied within a 100-hour or 200-hour Stage 5 course.

The impact of the selected issue on the growth, development and care of children, including children from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs
Support services and resources
Consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and Cultures
Policies and legislation
