The new Geography 7–10 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027.
2025 and 2026 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Life Skills
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Geographical concepts are to be integrated throughout the course where appropriate.
Places people live and belong to and why they are important
Factors that shape people’s perceptions of a place
Importance of places for identity and a sense of belonging
Location and distribution of landscapes, landforms, water resources or environments
Location of a place in relation to other familiar places
Ways people manage a place
Processes that change landscapes and landforms
The impacts human activities have on natural and human environments
How and why places should be taken care of
Interconnections between people, places or environments
How environments influence where people live
The significance of the relationships between people’s activities and connections to environments
Management of geographical issues, from local to national to global
Responses and actions undertaken by individuals, communities, organisations and governments
How connections are formed on different scales from local to national to global
Ability of environments to support life for the future
Strategies to reduce the impact of natural and human processes
Factors involved in the care and management of environments
Changes to landscapes, landforms and environments through natural and human geographical processes
How geographical features change over time
Strategies and actions to reduce the impact of natural and human geographical processes
