Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Timber industry: related materials, resources, tools, equipment and techniques

The following points guide teachers to select safe, accessible and appropriate materials, resources, tools and equipment relevant to the industry and project, and the stage of learning.

Schools must follow education sector or school-based policies and guidelines regarding age restrictions and supervision requirements for specific equipment.

All equipment marked with an asterisk (*) may have additional size and age restrictions and a local risk assessment may be required.

Students with disability may require adjustments.

Materials and resources: Components
  • Buttons, catches, drawer runners, handles, hinges, knockdown fittings, latches, nails, screws, specialised hardware, table clips

Measuring and marking-out tools
  • Dividers, marking gauge, marking knife, mortice gauge, pencil, rule, sliding bevel, tape measure, trammel, try square

Hand tools
  • Cutting: bench hook, chisel, coping saw, dovetail saw, Japanese saw, mitre saw, panel saw (ripping and crosscutting), rasps, surforms, tenon saw

  • Shaping or embellishing: carving gouges, hammer, mallet, planes, sanding blocks, scrapers, spokeshaves

Power tools
  • Cutting: cordless jigsaw, powered jigsaw

  • Shaping or embellishing: cordless drill, power drill, random orbit sander, laminate trimmer*, router*

Machine tools
  • Cutting: biscuit jointer, drill press, morticing machine, scroll saw, wood lathe*, pedestal or bench-mounted bandsaw*, thicknesser*

  • Shaping or embellishing: 3D printer, computer numerical control (CNC) router, detail sander, disc sander, drill press, laser cutter, spindle sander, wood lathe*, belt sander*, drum sander*

Clamping tools
  • Corner clamps, custom jigs or fixtures, F-clamp, G-clamp, mitre clamp, quick release clamp, ratchet straps, sash clamp, tapes

Assembly or joinery tools
  • Dovetail jigs, dowel jig, hammers, mallets, mortice and tenon jigs, nail punch, pocket screw jig, screwdrivers, biscuit joiner*, floating tenon joiner*

Joining techniques
  • Carcase: box pin or finger joints, dovetail, housing, mitre, rebate

  • Framing: bridle, dowel, floating tenon, halving or lap, housing joints, mitre, mortice and tenon

  • Widening: biscuit, butt, dowel, feather, floating tenon, tongue and groove

Shaping and forming techniques
  • Bending, carving, computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)/CNC processes, dry assembly, laminating, laser cutting or engraving, planing, routing*, sanding, turning*, veneering

Finishing techniques
  • Brushing, burnishing, polishing, preparing surface with chemicals or abrasives, pyrography, recoating, spraying, texturing, wiping
