The new History Elective 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the History Elective 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.

Stage 4
This section outlines the historical skills relevant to each focus area, which are to be integrated with the content.
Read and understand historical texts
Use historical terms and concepts to describe and explain people, societies and events for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts
Identify the origin, content, context and purpose of a range of sources
Process information from a range of sources as evidence in a historical argument
Evaluate the reliability, value and limitations of a range of sources for a specific historical inquiry
Identify and analyse reasons for different perspectives in a particular historical context
Use sources to account for the different perspectives of individuals and groups
Recognise that events and developments can be interpreted differently
Plan historical research to suit the purpose of a historical inquiry
Identify, locate, select and organise information from a variety of sources, including digital technologies and other methods
Acknowledge sources appropriately
Apply ethical considerations and practices relating to research
Develop texts that are supported by relevant evidence from a range of appropriate sources
Select and use a range of communication forms, such as oral, graphic, written, multimodal or digital, to communicate effectively about the past for different purposes and different audiences
