Courses 7–10
The Aboriginal Languages K–10 Syllabus contains both a mandatory course and elective courses.
Mandatory course 7–10
Students must complete a mandatory Languages course from either Loading , Loading , Loading or Loading . The mandatory course can also be completed through Life Skills outcomes and content for eligible students.
Elective courses 7–10
The Aboriginal Languages K–10 Syllabus includes 8 elective courses:
- Aboriginal Languages – First Language 200-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – First Language 100-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – First Language Life Skills 200-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – First Language Life Skills 100-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – Language Revival 200-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – Language Revival 100-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – Language Revival Life Skills 200-hour elective
- Aboriginal Languages – Language Revival Life Skills 100-hour elective.
Focus of learning
The study of Aboriginal Languages enables students to communicate in the target language and learn about the vital role that Language has in the transmission of Aboriginal cultures. Students learn to communicate in an Aboriginal Language by interacting, responding and composing. They develop an understanding of the relationship between Language, Culture and identity, and the role of Language awareness and building.
What students learn
Students apply knowledge, understanding and skills by interacting, responding and composing in the target language. They also learn about the role of Language, Culture and identity and the building of Language awareness.
Students use the target Language to share, respond and compose information. They recognise the relationships between Languages and Cultures, and apply their knowledges, understanding and skills in the identification of available resources to maintain, revive and strengthen Aboriginal Languages.
Course requirements
Safety and risk management
Schools are required to ensure they follow safety and risk management in delivering the Aboriginal Languages K–10 Syllabus.
Life Skills
For Aboriginal Languages Life Skills:
- Students are required to demonstrate achievement of one or more Aboriginal Languages 7–10 Life Skills outcomes.
- Outcomes and content should be selected to meet the particular needs of individual students.
- The focus areas provide possible frameworks for addressing the Aboriginal Languages 7–10 Life Skills outcomes and content and are suggestions only. Teachers have the flexibility to select, group and sequence outcomes and content to meet the needs, strengths, goals, interests and prior learning of their students.

Aboriginal Languages – Elective courses
Exclusions:
- 200-hour courses exclude 200-hour Life Skills courses
- 100-hour courses exclude 100-hour Life Skills courses
Students may not access Life Skills outcomes and other outcomes from the same subject.
