Rules 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 Formal assessment programs and tasks

NESA has made changes to Rule 2.1.1 to reflect the limits on take-home assessments for Preliminary courses. These changes include:

  • A new paragraph (paragraph 6) restricting schools to a maximum of one take-home assessment task per Preliminary course, worth no more than 15 per cent of the school-based assessment mark
  • Two new footnotes outlining NESA’s description of ‘in-school assessment tasks’ and ‘take-home assessment tasks’
  • A new footnote listing the Preliminary courses that are exempt from the new limits on take-home assessments
  • A new paragraph (paragraph 10) clarifying that schools must design formal assessment tasks to ensure marks reflect a student’s own work, and not their use of generative AI
  • Removal of requirements about multiple parts of formal assessment tasks – these are now obsolete.

  • A new paragraph (paragraph 25) restricting schools to a maximum of one take-home assessment task per HSC course, worth no more than 15 per cent of the school-based assessment mark
  • Two new footnotes outlining NESA’s description of ‘in-school assessment tasks’ and ‘take-home assessment tasks’
  • A new footnote listing the HSC courses that are exempt from the new limits on take-home assessments
  • A new paragraph (paragraph 29) clarifying that schools must design formal assessment tasks to ensure marks reflect a student’s own work, and not their use of generative AI
  • Removal of requirements about multiple parts of formal assessment tasks – these are now obsolete. 
  • A new requirement (paragraph 32) for teachers in marking formal assessment tasks, that marks are awarded based on evidence of a student’s own work and not their use of generative AI

Rule 2.2.2 Submitting HSC school-based assessment marks to NESA

NESA has made changes to Rule 2.2.2. These changes clarify principal responsibilities in certifying entered assessment marks. This ensures that entered marks are based on evidence of the student’s own knowledge, skills and understanding, and not the use of generative AI. This clarification (paragraph 27) helps ensure AI has not contributed to assessment task marks.

Rule 2.5.2 Certifying and submitting HSC projects, submitted works and performances

NESA has made changes to Rule 2.5.2 to include clarifying instructions for principals in the event a student’s project, submitted work or performance does not meet NESA’s certification criteria.  The clarification (paragraph 13) refers to supervising teacher’s consideration of whether the student has used generative AI for part of the student’s work.

Rule 10.1.2 Developing a school malpractice policy

NESA has made a change to Rule 10.1.2 to require schools not rely on software tools to detect generative AI in determining malpractice. This is a new requirement for schools in developing their school malpractice policy (paragraph 18).

Multiple syllabuses: Minor amendment – glossary definitions

  • Glossary definitions for complementary and supplementary updated for accuracy.
    Found in: The Loading , complementary angles: Two angles that form a right angle, i.e. the sum of the angles measured in degrees is 90°.
    Found in: The Loading , supplementary angles: Two angles that form a straight angle and whose sum is 180 degrees (a straight angle). For example, 45° and 135° are supplementary angles.

General website updates: HSC English prescriptions now available in Year 12 focus areas and an interactive selection tool

Introduced

  • The English Year 12 focus areas now contain the related lists of prescriptions (where they apply).
  • Additionally, the HSC English prescriptions tool was introduced to allow users to check that their selections meet prescription requirements in HSC English courses.
