The new Ancient History 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027.
2025 and 2026
- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 11
- Start implementing new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Ancient History Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 12
- Start implementing new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for new syllabus
Content
Year 11
- AH-11-05
analyses different types of sources for evidence to support a historical account or argument
- AH-11-06
explains differing interpretations and representations of the past
- AH-11-07
communicates historical understanding, applying historical knowledge, terms and concepts
Students discuss contemporary methods and issues involved in the investigation of ancient history through a study of at least ONE of the following focus area options:
- The investigation of ancient sites and sources
- The representation of the ancient past
- Conservation and reconstruction of ancient sites
- Cultural heritage and the role of museums
- The treatment and display of human remains.
The content may be taught as a standalone unit or teachers may develop an integrated study incorporating selected elements of 2 or more of the above 5 options. Content may also be integrated into Case studies, Features of ancient societies and the Historical investigation.
The nature and impact of the looting and illegal trade of antiquities on cultural heritage, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander antiquities
The role of museums in acquiring, storing and exhibiting artefacts and cultural materials
Cultural property and the arguments for and against repatriation
The contributions of museums to our understanding of ancient ways of life and the question of whose past is represented in displays and exhibitions
