Stage 1

Dance
Composing: Dance is composed to communicate ideas through shapes and movements
  • Improvise simple body shapes and movements using locomotor and non-locomotor movements, in response to a stimulus

  • Experiment with level, direction or pathway of movement with awareness of space

  • Respond to tempo and rhythm changes in music

  • Explore ways to express dynamics through movement

  • Compose simple dance sequences by linking body shapes and movements

  • Explore the movements used by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples in dance

  • Connect shapes and movements into a sequence in cooperation with others

  • Demonstrate safe dance practices with awareness of physical and social safety

Performing: Dance is performed to communicate ideas through shapes and movements
  • Explore ways to maintain balance and manipulate posture through body control

  • Perform simple dance sequences to communicate ideas

  • Reflect on personal experiences of composing and performing dance

Appreciating: Ideas are conveyed in various ways in dance
  • Discuss ideas, feelings and opinions in response to dance experiences

  • Describe how space, time and dynamics are used in dance, using Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary

  • Explore dance from cultural contexts around the world to recognise ways shapes, movements and ideas are communicated through dance

  • Describe ways Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples express connection to Country and Place through dance
