  • Textiles Technology 100-hour elective
  • Textiles Technology Life Skills 200-hour elective
  • Textiles Technology Life Skills 100-hour elective.

Focus of learning

The Textiles Technology 7–10 Syllabus enables students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills to design and create contemporary textile solutions. Students engage in practical experiences and project work to explore creative design opportunities, textile construction processes and material selection for end use. They learn about the work of textile designers to support their understanding of cultural and social diversity in the practice and application of textile technologies.

What students learn

Students develop knowledge and understanding about textile design and production processes, including techniques and Practices used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. They learn about textile design and construction and apply this in practice in individual and collaborative contexts. Students learn about the aesthetic and functional features of textile products and consider how they meet the specific needs of people in diverse contexts and societies.

Students learn and apply safe work practices when working with textile materials, technologies and processes. They investigate how textile design, material selection and production processes can influence sustainability and impact the environment. Students apply their knowledge of fibres, yarns and fabrics to design, plan, refine and create textile products.

Through diverse, real-world learning experiences, students engage with current and emerging textile technologies that have the potential to influence local and global textile industries.

Course requirements

Practical experiences and project work

To satisfy the requirements of the syllabus, students undertake a range of practical experiences and project work.

Practical experiences must make up the majority of the course and should be designed to be accessible to all students. Practical experiences may include:

  • the selection and application of design inspiration sources
  • experimentation and testing
  • construction techniques
  • application of decorative techniques.

These practical experiences should be used to develop the skills of designing, problem-solving, evaluating, using technology and communicating. Students can be supported and extended as they develop skills for design and production processes.

Individual interests can be fostered through student choice and participation in a range of experiences that may include working collaboratively, textile exhibitions and industry visits, including online collaboration and virtual industry experiences.

Textile projects

Designing and creating projects is integral to the Textiles Technology 7–10 Syllabus.

Textile project work involves designing and documenting the creation of products. Textile design areas may include:

  • apparel
  • accessories
  • costume
  • creative reuse
  • interior design
  • smart textiles
  • technical textiles
  • textile arts.

Students engage with design processes involving design inspiration, idea development, experimentation, testing and evaluation.

Students with disability may require adjustments in order to engage in practical experiences or project work.
