Rationale

Studying Textiles Technology 7–10 inspires students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to design and create contemporary textile solutions. Students engage in textile project work to explore creative design opportunities, textile construction processes and material selection for end use.

Through the study of the Textiles Technology 7–10 Syllabus, students broaden and deepen their knowledge of textile design and production processes. Creative exploration of textile designs encourages students to embrace an understanding of cultural and social diversity in the practice and application of textile technologies. Students recognise and investigate how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples apply Practices to design, create and innovate using customary and contemporary resources and technologies. They examine the ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples develop contemporary textiles as an expressive and functional medium.

Students investigate the relationship between designers, current trends and contemporary issues locally and globally. They learn about the work of textile designers as a source of design inspiration for the development and production of original, imaginative textile projects. Students learn to recognise aesthetic and functional features of textile products and consider how solutions meet the specific needs of people in diverse contexts and societies.

The Textiles Technology 7–10 Syllabus builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the Loading  and allows students to apply knowledge to new situations, advancing their practical and technical skills. Students apply creative and design thinking through project work to generate and communicate ideas.

The syllabus provides opportunities for students to make responsible decisions about the appropriate use of current and emerging technologies in the textile industry, exploring innovation, environmental sustainability, inclusive practices and societal needs.

Students have the opportunity to become increasingly safe, confident, skilful, efficient and discerning when applying their textile knowledge and skills to select materials and techniques to enhance the creativity and quality of textile products. They expand their understanding of related work environments while developing skills to equip them for further education, vocational pathways and personal interests.

The textile industry in Australia contributes significantly to research and development, driving innovation in areas such as smart fabrics, sustainable textiles and advanced manufacturing methods. It also supports the expression of culture and identity through fashion and design, while providing a wide range of employment opportunities across design, manufacturing, marketing, retail and research sectors.
