Course description
Courses 7–10
The Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus contains both a mandatory course and elective courses.
Mandatory course 7–10
Students must complete a mandatory Languages course from either Loading , Loading , Loading or Loading . The mandatory course can also be completed through Life Skills outcomes and content for eligible students.
Elective courses 7–10
The Modern Languages Syllabus includes 4 elective courses:
- Modern Languages 200-hour elective
- Modern Languages 100-hour elective
- Modern Languages Life Skills 200-hour elective
- Modern Languages Life Skills 100-hour elective.
Focus of learning
The Modern Languages syllabus has an emphasis on communication and developing students’ intercultural understanding. The syllabus provides students with knowledge and skills to communicate in the target language by learning how to interact, and understand and create texts.
What students learn
Students learn how to interact by exchanging and negotiating meaning in the target language, applying knowledge of the language system and also the culture(s) of the target language. They develop knowledge and skills to interpret and respond to a range of texts and develop intercultural understanding through target language texts.
Students develop knowledge and skills to create a range of texts appropriate to context, purpose and audience by using culturally appropriate language.
Course requirements
Safety and risk management
Schools are required to ensure they follow safety and risk management in delivering the Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus.
Life Skills
For Modern Languages Life Skills:
- Students are required to demonstrate achievement of one or more Modern Languages 7–10 Life Skills outcomes.
- Outcomes and content should be selected to meet the particular needs of individual students.
- The focus areas provide possible ways for addressing the Modern Languages 7–10 Life Skills outcomes and content and are suggestions only. Teachers have the flexibility to select, group and sequence outcomes and content to meet the needs, strengths, goals, interests and prior learning of their students.

Modern Languages – Elective courses
* The general languages course name should be used when a language other than what is listed above is delivered.
Exclusions:
- 200-hour courses exclude 200-hour Life Skills courses
- 100-hour courses exclude 100-hour Life Skills courses
Students may not access Life Skills outcomes and other outcomes from the same subject.
