2025 and 2026
- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 11
- Start implementing new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 12
- Start implementing new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for new syllabus
Content
Year 11
Students investigate forces and ideas that shaped the modern world through a study of key events and developments and the meaning of modernity. The historical concepts and skills content is to be integrated as appropriate.
Students study at least ONE of the following options:
- The Age of Enlightenment
- The French Revolution
- The Age of Imperialism
- The Industrial Age
- The First World War
- The Age of Decolonisation
The nature of imperialism in the early 20th century
An overview of the emergence of movements for decolonisation and self-determination
The impact of the First and Second World Wars on European empires
The variety of ways different groups fought for independence and nationhood
The impact of the Cold War on decolonisation
The role of the United Nations in supporting decolonisation and self-determination
A case study on the causes, nature and outcomes of decolonisation in at least ONE of the following countries: Algeria, Angola, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Rwanda, Suriname, Vietnam
The role of individuals and groups in independence movements in the selected case study(ies)
Problems of decolonisation
The impact of decolonisation on the chosen case study
The impact of decolonisation on the global balance of power
