Life Skills for Stage 6

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Engaging with texts
Reading, viewing, representing or responding to texts
  • Engage with a range of preferred objects or images

  • Identify a preference for a text

  • Demonstrate appropriate listening skills when engaging with texts

  • Respond to shared reading, viewing or listening experiences

  • Engage with real-world texts to gain information

  • Engage with texts for interest or enjoyment

  • Engage with a broadening range of texts

  • Express a preferred way to access a text

  • Respond personally to a text

  • Recognise alternative responses to texts

  • Share preferences and new understandings

Strategies for engaging with texts
  • Use reading, viewing or listening strategies to locate and extract information and ideas

  • Use literacy strategies to decode unfamiliar words in texts

  • Use tools or programs to aid comprehension

  • Identify the relevance and usefulness of information presented in a text, including digital texts

  • Identify facts and opinions in texts

  • Identify preferred reading strategies to improve understanding and engagement
