The Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Syllabus includes 4 elective courses:
- Visual and Motion Design 200-hour elective
- Visual and Motion Design 100-hour elective
- Visual and Motion Design Life Skills 200-hour elective
- Visual and Motion Design Life Skills 100-hour elective.
Focus of learning
The Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Syllabus provides students with the opportunity to make design artworks using new and emerging visual and motion design forms, drawing inspiration from the world and how designers make, respond to and display design artworks. Students produce individual or collaborative design artworks in a range of design forms, and produce written, oral and multimodal texts to demonstrate their understanding of the significance of design artworks, design practitioners and the design world.
What students learn
Students develop knowledge, understanding and skills to enjoy designing, making and interpreting design artworks informed by their understanding of Artworld concepts, Viewpoints and Design Practice.
In Designing and making, students learn about design practice and the importance of designing unique and ethically responsible content. They explore how technologies, equipment, materials, processes, techniques, styles and qualities can support the creation of their design artworks as a body of work.
In Critical and historical studies, students learn to appreciate the significance of design artworks and build ethical awareness of cultural representation and appropriation. They learn to appreciate different cultures and perspectives, equipping them to engage more thoughtfully and responsibly in our diverse world. Students develop insight into real-world design practice and connect their own experiences with broader design practice.
Course requirements
Safety and risk management
Schools are required to ensure they follow Loading in delivering the Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Syllabus.
100-hour and 200-hour elective course requirements
Students must complete the mandatory Visual Arts course (Stage 4 outcomes and content) before starting the elective courses. The mandatory course can also be completed through Visual Arts 7–10 Life Skills outcomes and content for eligible students.
Visual and Motion Design 7–10 may be studied as an elective 100-hour or 200-hour course. The content available for Stage 4 is identical to Stage 5. When teaching the course in Stage 4, the Stage 5 outcomes may be adjusted as appropriate to the needs of students in Years 7 and 8. Loading .
In the elective course, approximately 60 per cent of class time should involve engaging in Designing and making and approximately 40 per cent of class time should involve engaging in Critical and historical studies.
Schools determine the amount of time required for each focus area based on students’ needs.
Life Skills – 100-hour and 200-hour elective courses
For Visual and Motion Design Life Skills:
- Students are required to demonstrate achievement of one or more Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Life Skills outcomes
- Outcomes and content should be selected to meet the needs of individual students
- The focus areas provide possible frameworks for addressing the Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Life Skills outcomes and content and are suggestions only. Teachers have the flexibility to select, group and sequence outcomes and content to meet the needs, strengths, goals, interests and prior learning of their students
- Opportunities to engage in Designing and making design artworks are integral to the development of knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to design practice. Teachers may determine the appropriate amount of class time for engaging in Designing and making, based on the needs, abilities and prior learning of their students. Some students with disability may require adjustments to engage in design practice.
