The new Music 2 11–12 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2027 and will replace the Music 2 Stage 6 Syllabus (2009).

- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching the new syllabus for Year 11
- Start implementing new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Music 2 Stage 6 Syllabus (2009) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching the new syllabus for Year 12
- Start implementing new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for the new syllabus
Content
Year 12
Students undertake an investigation in one specialised area of performance OR musicological investigation OR composition in ONE chosen style from the list below:
- music of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples (traditional, art, contemporary or popular)
- music of global cultures and traditions
- jazz
- early music (pre 1600)
- music of the Baroque period
- music of the Classical period
- music of the Romantic period
- music of the 20th century
- music of the 21st century.
Students analyse and evaluate musical materials related to their specialisation to deepen their knowledge and understanding of how Music context and Music language shapes musical meaning and expressive intent.
Students study the content that relates to their chosen area of specialisation.
Apply stylistic conventions and expressive techniques to the rehearsal and performance of solo and ensemble repertoire
Apply contextual and stylistic conventions to the leadership of solo and ensemble music-making
Apply the findings of musical investigations to inform interpretative decision-making
Analyse how Music context and Music language are used to shape meaning in music created by composers and performers
Compare the musical content of scores, recorded performances and domain specific commentary as part of their musicological investigation in their chosen area of study
Select musical evidence to support ideas and conclusions in their chosen area of study
Create original pieces for solo and ensemble music, applying stylistic conventions and expressive techniques to shape meaning
Develop musical ideas for specific combinations of voices, instruments and technologies using Music language for expressive intent
Apply the findings of musical investigations to inform composition decision-making and the documentation of sound-based inventions
