Appreciation

In Appreciation students use context, research, and the components of appreciation to analyse, interpret and evaluate practitioners and dance works. Students will study a prescribed dance work from the HSC Dance prescriptions and select and research ONE prescribed practitioner from the HSC Dance prescriptions. They use stimulus, idea, intent, elements of dance, auditory elements, abstract symbolic movement, structure, dancers and theatrical elements as the components of appreciation to make informed judgements.

Context
  • Explain how context informs interpretation and judgements about practitioners and dance works

  • Apply the ethics and responsibilities associated with research in dance and using professional dance works

  • Use the language of dance appreciation when researching and making judgements about practitioners and dance works in different contexts

  • Analyse the contextual background, training, influences, style and body of work of the practitioner

  • Analyse the contextual background of the dance work

Components of appreciation
  • Explain the components of appreciation and how they are applied to make informed judgements about dance works and practitioners

  • Evaluate the practitioner’s genre, style, technique and body of work

  • Use the components of appreciation to describe, analyse, interpret and make informed judgements about dance works

  • Analyse the relationship between the structure of the dance work and the auditory elements

  • Reflect critically on the use of the components of appreciation in order to refine the evaluation of a dance work

  • Evaluate the dance work and its contribution to the art form
