The Communication Technology 7–10 Syllabus includes 8 elective courses:
- Communication Technology: Graphics – 200-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Graphics – 100-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Multimedia – 200-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Multimedia – 100-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Graphics Life Skills – 200-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Graphics Life Skills – 100-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Multimedia Life Skills – 200-hour elective
- Communication Technology: Multimedia Life Skills – 100-hour elective.
Focus of learning
The Communication Technology 7–10 Syllabus enables students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the design and production of graphic and multimedia solutions across a range of industry contexts. Through the exploration of communication techniques and contemporary production tools, students learn to apply technologies and design processes to create purposeful design solutions. Practical experiences and project work support the development of technical skills, project management, collaboration and communication skills.
Course requirements
Practical experiences and project work
To satisfy the requirements of the syllabus, students undertake a range of practical experiences and project work relevant to all aspects of the practices studied.
Practical experiences must make up the majority of the course and should be designed to be accessible to all students. Practical experiences may include:
- collaborative activities
- investigations
- models, prototypes and simulations
- industry visits.
As part of practical experiences and project work, students can undertake a project of interest and personal significance that involves sustained practice and demonstrates their interests and skills to integrate and apply technological concepts and skills.
Practical experiences should be designed to be accessible to all students. Students with disability may require adjustments in order to engage in practical experiences. Production processes and applications may be undertaken using assistive technology, including eye gaze technology, screen readers or tactile technology.
Safety and risk management
Schools are required to ensure they follow Loading in delivering the Communication Technology 7–10 Syllabus.
100-hour and 200-hour elective course requirements
Communication Technology 7–10 may be studied as a Graphics 100-hour or a 200-hour course or a Multimedia 100-hour or a 200-hour course.
The content available for Stage 4 is identical to Stage 5. When teaching the course in Stage 4, the Stage 5 outcomes may be adjusted as appropriate for the needs of students in Years 7 and 8. Loading .
All outcomes must be programmed for 100-hour and 200-hour courses.
Graphics 100-hour elective course requirements
Students are required to undertake:
- the Communication Technology principles and project management (core) focus area
- the Drawing systems (core) focus area, selecting at least one drawing systems context
- at least one additional focus area
- at least 2 graphics projects, with associated folio documentation
- at least one collaborative activity.
Graphics 200-hour elective course requirements
Students are required to undertake:
- the Communication Technology principles and project management (core) focus area
- the Drawing systems (core) focus area, selecting at least 2 drawing systems contexts
- at least 2 additional focus areas
- at least 4 graphics projects, with associated folio documentation
- at least one collaborative activity.
Multimedia 100-hour elective course requirements
Students are required to undertake:
- the Communication Technology principles and project management (core) focus area
- at least 2 additional focus areas
- at least 2 multimedia projects, with associated folio documentation
- at least one collaborative activity.
Multimedia 200-hour elective course requirements
Students are required to undertake:
- the Communication Technology principles and project management (core) focus area
- at least 3 additional focus areas
- at least 4 multimedia projects, with associated folio documentation
- at least one collaborative activity.
Life Skills 100-hour and 200-hour elective courses
For Communication Technology Life Skills:
- Students are required to demonstrate achievement of one or more Communication Technology 7–10 Life Skills outcomes.
- Outcomes and content should be selected to meet the particular needs of individual students.
- The focus areas provide possible frameworks for addressing the Communication Technology 7–10 Life Skills outcomes and content and are suggestions only. Teachers have the flexibility to select, group and sequence outcomes and content to meet the needs, strengths, goals, interests and prior learning of their students.
- Where appropriate, students should have the opportunity to engage in practical experiences or project work, including documenting project work using visual, audio, written or multimodal forms. Some students with disability may require adjustments in order to engage in practical experiences.
- Collaborative activities provide opportunities for students to develop communication and interpersonal skills. Where appropriate, students should have the opportunity to collaborate on tasks. Some students may require explicit teaching of collaboration skills.
