The new Biology 11–12 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2027 and will replace the Biology Stage 6 Syllabus (2017).
2026
- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching the new syllabus for Year 11
- Start implementing new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Biology Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching the new syllabus for Year 12
- Start implementing new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for new syllabus
Content
Life Skills
- BI-LS-02
identifies the components of living things and their functions
- BI-LS-03
demonstrates ways to sustain living things
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Relevant Working scientifically outcomes and content should be integrated with each focus area based on the strengths and needs of individual students.
Recognise that plants and animals are made up of more than one cell
Recognise that cells come together to form tissues
Recognise that tissues come together to form organs
Identify native plants used in the Community for bush tucker or medicinal purposes
Identify the basic needs of plants for growth
Recognise sunlight as a source of energy for plants
Recognise and use the term ‘photosynthesis’ to refer to the process where plants use sunlight, water and air to produce nutrients and oxygen
Engage in safe practices when collecting plants or parts of plants for observation
Participate in a practical investigation to identify a basic need that influences plant growth
Demonstrate ways to care for a plant
Identify the role of roots, stems and leaves in plants
Produce diagrams of plants or parts of plants
Select a plant and produce a plant profile

Recognise scientific terms used when grouping animals with similar features
Recognise the major organs in mammals
Identify the function of the major organs in mammals
Identify that organs work together in systems
Participate in a practical investigation to model the process of digestion or respiration
Recognise that external conditions can influence the human body
Recognise ways the body responds to external conditions
Demonstrate ways to regulate the body in response to environmental conditions
