Students develop key understandings of the benefits of physical activity and sport for individuals and communities, from personal, social and cultural perspectives.

What students learn

Students learn about movement and performance across a diverse range of physical activities and sporting contexts. Through active participation in physical activity, they build confidence and competence, enhancing their engagement and potential for success throughout life. Students learn to interpret and apply feedback as they refine their movement skills, concepts and strategies. Through their learning experiences students develop and refine essential self-management and interpersonal skills, including communication, collaboration, leadership, goal-setting and problem-solving. Students investigate the importance of safety and ethical considerations while engaging in physical activity and sport. With an emphasis on sports science, students apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, learning about fitness and recovery, biomechanics and sport psychology. They have the opportunity to extend this learning through the exploration of nutrition and hydration, body systems, and aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Students also examine the broader social and cultural significance of physical activity and sport. They investigate the impact of physical activity and sport on individuals and communities, explore Australia’s unique sporting identity, and consider the diverse roles physical activity plays across different communities. Contemporary issues such as technological innovation, media influence and equity in sport are explored. Students learn to express ideas about physical activity and sport for a range of purposes and audiences. They are empowered to apply their learning in meaningful ways and develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and sport.
