Overview

Course description

The Work Education 7–10 Syllabus includes 4 elective courses:

  • Work Education 200 hours
  • Work Education 100 hours
  • Work Education Life Skills 200 hours
  • Work Education Life Skills 100 hours.

The Work Education 7–10 Syllabus supports the development of knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the changing world of work. Students prepare for the working world by developing an understanding of the roles of education, training and employment, and an appreciation of the role of lifelong learning in career development and managing transitions in education and work.

What students learn

Work Education provides opportunities for students to explore the nature of work and current workplace issues, including the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers, workplace safety and technological change. Students examine and reflect on their personal goals, attributes and values to inform their choices and career pathway plans.

Students develop work-related skills and entrepreneurial behaviours to effectively participate in the workforce. They develop career-management skills to effectively navigate changing industries and emerging technologies. They are provided with opportunities to practise skills required to work in hypothetical and real-world situations, enabling them to explore possible future career options and pathways.

Students develop values and attitudes that promote ethical and safe practices in the workplace, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Work Education 7–10 may be studied as a 100-hour or a 200-hour course. The content available for Stage 4 is identical to Stage 5. When teaching the course in Stage 4, the Stage 5 outcomes may be adjusted as appropriate to the needs of students in Years 7 and 8. Loading .

100-hour course

Students are required to undertake:

  • a minimum of 2 core focus areas
  • additional study of selected options to meet the 100-hour requirement.
200-hour course

Students are required to undertake:

  • all 4 core focus areas
  • additional study of selected options to meet the 200-hour requirement.

It is recommended that the 100-hour and 200-hour courses commence with a core focus area. Options build on relevant aspects of the essential learning of core focus areas and allow teachers and students to extend core learning.

Across a 100-hour course or a 200-hour course, students may study ONE School-developed option.

Life Skills – 100-hour and 200-hour courses

For Work Education Life Skills:

  • Students are required to demonstrate achievement of one or more Work Education 7–10 Life Skills outcomes.
  • Outcomes and content should be selected to meet the particular needs of individual students.
  • The focus areas provide possible frameworks for addressing Work Education 7–10 Life Skills outcomes and content and are suggestions only. Teachers have the flexibility to select, group and sequence outcomes and content to meet the needs, strengths, goals, interests and prior learning of their students.
  • Work Education concepts and skills can be integrated into teaching and learning activities as appropriate to the needs, interests and abilities of students.
  • It is recommended that students have opportunities to engage in work experience throughout the course to support the development of their knowledge and skills. Decisions relating to work experience opportunities for students should consider their needs and strengths, safety, and any adjustments that may be required.
