Life Skills for Stage 6

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Investigating modern history – The nature of modern history

Students may investigate one or more of the following options, part of an option or elements of the content as appropriate. Content from the options can also be combined for an integrated study or combined with any of the case studies.

  • The investigation of historic sites and sources
  • The contestability of the past
  • The construction of modern histories
  • The representation and commemoration of the past

Real sources, fakes and forgeries
  • Examples of real sources, fakes and forgeries

  • Problems identifying real sources, fakes and forgeries, including the identification and origin of artefacts, human remains and documents, and the reliability of writers who did not witness the events they describe

  • Why people create fakes and forgeries

  • Difficulties with scientific and comparative dating techniques for documents and objects

  • Challenges in the process of undertaking a historical investigation

Contestability
  • Different representations of the past

  • Sources can interpret the past differently

  • Different interpretations of a person or event from the past in sources
