Life Skills for Stage 6

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

The shaping of the modern world

The following options are suggestions only. Teachers may develop their own options to support student interests and abilities. Students may explore one option, part of an option or elements of the content as appropriate.

  • The Age of Enlightenment
  • The French Revolution
  • The Age of Imperialism
  • The Industrial Age
  • The First World War
  • The Age of Decolonisation
Connections and context
  • A personal milestone that has brought about change

  • How things have changed in society over time

  • New ideas can lead to change

  • New ideas can lead to tensions between groups

  • Actions that can be taken to solve personal problems or local community issues

  • Actions that have been taken throughout history in response to tensions

The nature of a key event or development
  • A significant individual or group that has led to a new idea

  • A significant individual or group that has led the opposition to a new idea

  • Ways in which individuals or groups can gain power

  • How a new idea had a positive impact on one or more groups of people

  • How a new idea had a negative impact on one or more groups of people

Significance and legacy
  • How individuals and groups have had different ways of responding to new ideas

  • How tensions have been resolved

  • Short, medium and/or long-term impact of a change

  • How new ideas can lead to permanent change

  • Appreciation of the impact of history on modern life
