The new Modern History 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027 and will replace the Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus (2017).
2025 and 2026
- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching the new syllabus for Year 11
- Start implementing the new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching the new syllabus for Year 12
- Start implementing the new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for the new syllabus
Content
Year 12
Students investigate key features, individuals, groups, events and developments that shaped the history of a selected nation. Students are to investigate ONE of the following countries during a specific period of the 20th century.
The historical concepts and skills content is to be integrated as appropriate.
- Australia 1918–1949
- China 1927–1949
- Cuba 1940–1991
- Indonesia 1945–2004
- Iran 1945–1989
- Japan 1904–1937
- Russia and the Soviet Union 1917–1941
- United States 1919–1941
- Australia’s role at the Paris Peace Conference 
- The social impact of WWI in Australia, including soldier settlement and the changing role of women 
- Innovation and its impact on industrialisation, urbanisation and rural development 
- The experiences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples post-WWI 
- The impact of the Great Depression on different groups in Australian society 
- The effectiveness of political responses to the crisis of the Great Depression 
- Australian nationalism in the 1930s, including the impact of industrialism, sport and military identity 
- Aboriginal activism in the 1930s, including the creation of The Day of Mourning in 1938 
- The changing nature of Australia’s foreign policy from 1918 to 1949 
- Australia’s changing relationship with the United States
