The new Modern History 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027.
2025 and 2026
- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 11
- Start implementing new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 12
- Start implementing new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for new syllabus
Content
Year 11
Students investigate forces and ideas that shaped the modern world through a study of key events and developments and the meaning of modernity. The historical concepts and skills content is to be integrated as appropriate.
Students study at least ONE of the following options:
- The Age of Enlightenment
- The French Revolution
- The Age of Imperialism
- The Industrial Age
- The First World War
- The Age of Decolonisation
The changing motives and characteristics of European imperialism from the 18th century to the early 20th century
An overview of the extent of Western imperial expansion by 1914 in Africa, Asia and the Pacific
Key ideas of the imperial age, including nationalism, the glorification of ‘Empire’, Social Darwinism, the Christian mission, economic gain
At least ONE case study of European imperialism outside Europe
The establishment of, justification for, and maintenance of the imperial presence
The effects of European colonialism on existing social, cultural and economic systems
Key developments in colonial rule
The varied responses of colonised peoples to imperial presence, including resistance movements
The long-term effects of imperialism on both the colonisers and colonised
The effects of imperialism on global factors shaping the modern world
