Year 12

National studies

Students investigate key features, individuals, groups, events and developments that shaped the history of a selected nation. Students are to investigate ONE of the following countries during a specific period of the 20th century.

The historical concepts and skills content is to be integrated as appropriate.

  • Australia 1918–1949
  • China 1927–1949
  • Cuba 1940–1991
  • Indonesia 1945–2004
  • Iran 1945–1989
  • Japan 1904–1937
  • Russia and the Soviet Union 1917–1941
  • United States 1919–1941

Context
  • The impact of Japanese occupation and the rise of the nationalist movement

  • The nature and impact of Sukarno’s presidency, including Guided Democracy, challenges to independence and Sukarno’s shaping of Pancasila

The 1965 coup
  • The growth of the Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) (Indonesian Communist Party)

  • Reasons for, and outcome of, the 1965 coup

  • The role and influence of the army and religious groups

Suharto and the New Order
  • The ideology and nature of the New Order and its political, economic and foreign policy impact

  • The challenges and impact of religious and regional issues, including separatism

  • Reasons for, and consequences of, the end of the Suharto/New Order era

  • Political, economic and social challenges in the post-Suharto era

Indonesian foreign policy 1945–2004
  • The aims, nature and strategies of Indonesian foreign policy

  • The nature and impact of Indonesia’s relations with Australia
