Geographical inquiry skills

The geographical inquiry skills content is to be integrated throughout the course.

Acquiring geographical information
  • Develop geographical questions to inform a plan for inquiry

  • Acquire quantitative and/or qualitative data and information using ethical practices by:

    • collecting and recording primary geographical data using a range of tools
    • gathering and organising geographical information from secondary sources
Processing geographical information
  • Represent data and information in appropriate forms, and where appropriate, by:

    • using digital and spatial technologies
    • conforming to cartographic conventions
  • Interpret, synthesise and analyse data and information, using quantitative and qualitative methods to:

    • make reasoned generalisations and inferences
    • propose explanations for patterns, trends, relationships and anomalies, using geographical models and theories where relevant
    • draw conclusions and predict future trends
  • Use GIS to analyse data where appropriate

  • Evaluate data and information in various forms for reliability, bias, validity and usefulness, including limitations

Applying geographical understanding
  • Evaluate options in response to a geographical challenge by:

    • developing evaluation criteria based on environmental, social and economic considerations
    • making an on-balance judgement about the most appropriate option(s)
  • Propose actions and predict outcomes

  • Develop a plan to implement a proposal

  • Assess how causes, impacts and/or responses relevant to one geographic context may be applicable to another

Communicating geographical understanding
  • Communicate geographical understanding, findings, conclusions and/or ideas by using:

    • a variety of presentation methods appropriate to purpose and audience
    • digital and spatial technologies where appropriate
    • ethical practices as relevant
  • Plan the effective communication of ideas and/or actions for stakeholders for the management of places and environments

  • Reflect on the process and effectiveness of geographical inquiry
