Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 6

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Communicating
Communicating in everyday contexts
  • Use preferred communication form(s) to communicate a message

  • Interact with a person, object or event in everyday situations

  • Respond to communication initiated by others

  • Initiate communication with a familiar person or audience

  • Recognise and use appropriate nonverbal cues and behaviours to communicate a message

  • Communicate needs, requests, choices and preferences with purpose and clarity

  • Follow individual or multi-step instructions to understand and complete routines or tasks

  • Ask questions to clarify or acquire information

  • Recognise and use safe and responsible communication

  • Identify the meaning of colloquial or non-literal language

  • Identify when to share information in everyday situations

  • Initiate, sustain and respectfully conclude interactions

Strategies for communication
  • Engage in interactions with people in familiar and unfamiliar contexts

  • Use environmental or auditory cues to make informed decisions

  • Communicate emotions and feelings in contextually and age-appropriate ways

  • Identify people and support networks that can be trusted when sharing information

  • Identify roles and responsibilities when working collaboratively

  • Use inclusive verbal and nonverbal communication respectfully

  • Apply interpersonal skills to solve problems
