Rationale
The Visual Arts 7–10 Syllabus provides students with opportunities to understand and engage with the artworld. The study of Visual Arts 7–10 is founded on distinct ways of perceiving and representing the world through making and interpreting artworks. Through the study of Art making and Art critical and historical studies, students develop a deep understanding of historical and contemporary contexts and an appreciation for the diversity of human expression.
Students develop knowledge, understanding and growing artistic independence through an interrelated study of Artworld concepts, Viewpoints and Practice. They are encouraged to become reflective of their own practice and the practice of others, and develop, with increasing autonomy, complex knowledge and skills in representation, interpretation, and critical and creative thinking.
Students develop invaluable insights into the real-world practices of artworld practitioners, nurturing a deep connection with their own experiences and the broader artworld. The syllabus encourages an appreciation for the diverse personal, collaborative, social, cultural and historical contexts that shape artworld practices, prompting students to explore different perspectives of visual arts and culture. This awareness helps students recognise their role in contributing to and enriching culture.
The syllabus provides opportunities for engagement with the rich and distinctive Cultural Expressions and customs of varied communities throughout history, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. It also supports cross-cultural understanding by encouraging a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of diversity and providing insights about shared human experiences and the world.
The Visual Arts 7–10 Syllabus supports students in developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to navigate and actively participate in contemporary society. They learn to interpret visual and multimodal languages, which is crucial for communication in today’s world, and develop a sense of self and wellbeing. Knowledge of visual arts fosters personal development, enhances problem-solving, critical thinking and creative skills, and prepares students as innovative thinkers for a variety of future learning opportunities and career paths.
