Life Skills for Stage 6

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Reversible reactions

Teachers select relevant Working scientifically outcomes and content to integrate with this focus area based on the strengths and needs of individual students.

Dissolving
  • Recognise solutes that dissolve in water

  • Participate in a practical investigation to determine how much of a solute dissolves in water

  • Identify safety risks associated with hot liquids

  • Observe safely the behaviour of solutes in water of different temperatures

  • Participate in a practical investigation to explore the effect of temperature on the time taken for a solute to completely dissolve in a liquid

  • Identify that chemical reactions are faster at higher temperatures

  • Observe the effect of particle size on the time taken for a solid to dissolve in water

  • Participate in a practical investigation to explore one or more factors that can change the rate of a chemical reaction

Evaporating
  • Observe the effects of evaporation in everyday living

  • Participate in a practical investigation to observe the evaporation of water from a solution

  • Observe residues of evaporation in everyday living

  • Observe the time taken for a liquid to evaporate under different conditions

  • Participate in a practical investigation to identify that a solute reappears after the water evaporates from a solution

  • Demonstrate understanding that a substance dissolving in a liquid and reappearing after evaporation is a reversible reaction

  • Identify that some chemical reactions are reversible
