The new Modern History 11–12 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027.
2025 and 2026
- Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027, Term 1
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 11
- Start implementing new Year 11 school-based assessment requirements
- Continue to teach the Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus (2017) for Year 12
2027, Term 4
- Start teaching new syllabuses for Year 12
- Start implementing new Year 12 school-based assessment requirements
2028
- First HSC examination for new syllabus
Content
Life Skills
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Students may investigate one or more of the following options, part of an option or elements of the content as appropriate. Content from the options can also be combined for an integrated study or combined with any of the case studies.
- The investigation of historic sites and sources
- The contestability of the past
- The construction of modern histories
- The representation and commemoration of the past
Different types of sources
Places where historians can find sources to investigate the past
Use sources to develop an understanding of people, places and events of the past
Use sources to understand the history of a familiar site
Use sources to ask and answer questions about the past
Issues associated with reconstructing the past through archaeological evidence
Issues associated with reconstructing the past through modern written texts
Make comparisons between the past and the present
Construction and reconstruction in relation to history
Ways in which history is preserved or conserved, including personal or community history
Threats to construction and reconstruction
Efforts to reconstruct historical sites
How historical sites are portrayed in popular culture
Reliability of reconstructions of historical sites
