Rationale

The Geography Elective 7–10 Syllabus integrates knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities to foster curiosity about the world and encourage deeper exploration of the processes that shape our global landscape. The syllabus supports students to become proactive, informed and responsible citizens capable of recognising the viewpoints of others and expressing their own ideas and reasoning.

The Geography Elective syllabus emphasises the physical, social, cultural, economic and political influences on people, places and environments, from the local to the global scale. The syllabus provides students with opportunities to broaden their knowledge of physical geography by investigating the natural processes that shape the Earth and contribute to environmental challenges. Students develop deeper knowledge and understanding of human geography through the exploration of interconnected places and communities, global responsibilities and responses to contemporary issues.

Students engage with the Knowledges of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and international Indigenous communities to explore Culturally inclusive strategies for addressing global challenges. These perspectives are interconnected with contemporary issues and play a vital role in promoting sustainability, equity and resilience at local, national and global scales, deepening students’ understanding of cultural diversity.

The Geography Elective 7–10 Syllabus is designed to provide students with opportunities to explore areas of interest and deepen their understanding of geography through investigative studies and geographical inquiry. It reinforces the importance of interpreting spatial data, assessing environmental risk and proposing informed responses to geographical issues.

Students may apply their knowledge of diverse geographic experiences to a wide range of post-school endeavours, including further education, work and career opportunities in geography-related fields. These may include data analysis, environmental assessment, natural resource management, urban planning, sustainability evaluation, tourism development and management, demography and other related disciplines as well as community initiatives, volunteering and personal projects.
